 2023 Preview 


       Shades Valley completed the 2022 season with a 5-4 record. Last year Shades Valley just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 6A region six with a 2-4 region record.

       The Mounties improved in 2022 with their first winning season since 2017.

       Since 2010, Shades Valley has gone a combined 59-79. Their 42.8% winning percentage ranks 42nd in Class 6A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Shades Valley has managed to compile a record of 111-158. Their 41.0% winning percentage ranks 44th in Class 6A and 279th in the AHSAA.




       The Mounties are led by head coach Reuben Nelson who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 8-11 over the past two seasons at Shades Valley. The Mounties have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Nelson. His 122 wins rank 48th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Nelson's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twelve times and won five region championships. Coach Nelson won a state championship at Ramsay in 2016.

       The Mounties could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region six this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Shades Valley missed the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season in 2023.

       The Mounties open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Stanhope Elmore on Friday, August 25 at Frank A. Nix Memorial Athletic Complex. Last year the Stanhope Elmore Mustangs finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 6A region two. The Mustangs ended last season on a positive note with a win over Minor by a score of 21-7 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       Shades Valley and Stanhope Elmore have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Mounties have a 2-2-0 record against the Mustangs. They last met in 2022 with Shades Valley winning by a score of 20-13.

      

       The Mounties return 6A All-State Senior linebacker Ethan Johnson. He was named to the second team last season.
